Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease of the arterial wall, which is driven by chronic inflammatory responses and a dysregulated lipid metabolism. Left untreated, atherosclerosis can eventually result in myocardial infarction or stroke. Marieke Boshuizen focuses on the understanding of the functional contribution of interferons in atherogenesis with regards to foam cell formation and foam cell inflammatory responses.
