HIV remains a major global health burden. One of the challenges to successful antiretroviral treatment (ART) is durable viral suppression in the context of growing HIV drug resistance in sub-Saharan Africa. Sonia Boender describes the long-term virological suppression rates in HIV-infected children and adults receiving first-line ART in low and middle income countries, She also describes future drug options for people who are failing standard first and second-line ART.
