Rens Limpens carries out fundamental research into silicon nanocrystals, with the ultimate aim of increasing the efficiency of solar cells. Adding a layer of nanocrystals to existing solar cells allows for the down-conversion of high-energy light photons, which can be converted more efficiently. One of the aspects Limpens investigates is whether the excess energy that is present after the absorption of a high-energy photon can be put to use before thermalisation processes come into play.
