Peter Bloem’s research focuses on single sample statistics, the central question being what we can learn from a single example. If we are faced with a complex process that produces large, intricate constructs, but we only have one example of its output, can we still draw conclusions about the source or ascribe meaning to the patterns we find? This is not just an academic exercise if we take into account that we only have one Internet, one climate system and one global financial system, to name a few examples.
