Recent years has seen a rise in the number of local preventative programmes aimed stimulating the positive development of youths at risk and keep them on the straight and narrow. However, no systematic research has been carried out into how the programmes work exactly. Maike Kooijmans evaluates the effectiveness of two youth work practices in Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands: a football project and an artistic talent project. By revealing the interventional mechanisms and developmental patterns in these practices, she aims to show how and for what type of youths the projects fail or succeed in effecting prevention.
