Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection of the central nervous system. Following the introduction of different vaccines and adjunctive dexamethasone treatment, two nationwide cohort studies were performed in the Netherlands in 1998 and 2002. Marjolein Lucas describes the clinical characteristics, complications and outcomes of community-acquired bacterial meningitis patients from these two studies.
