The majority of broadly protective influenza vaccine candidates are currently in the early stages of development, which means it will take several years before any of these will be in a position to impact potential future impacts. However, research suggests that the breadth of protection induced by conventional influenza vaccines has been underestimated. Anna Roos investigates whether the breadth of protection mediated by a licensed seasonal influenza vaccine could be improved by adjusting its vaccination regimen, with the aim of increasing pandemic preparedness until more broadly protective influenza vaccines become available.
