María Luisa Bemberg (1922-1995) is one of the most important Argentinean and Latin-American filmmakers. In her films, Bemberg openly criticizes specific characteristics of Argentinean and Latin American society, such as social class differences, abuse of power and the hypocrisy of the church. In her analysis of Bemberg’s work, Anke van Haastrecht focuses on the way Bemberg applies and combines cinematographic and dialogue techniques, stories and characters into successful and interesting mainstream films with a strong critical message.
