Although regional media companies in the Netherlands have become fully aware of the consequences of the digitalisation of mass media, they have shown reluctance to change. They have cut costs and imposed austerity as a first response, rather than reconsider their strategies, innovate and invest. Martin Cornelis van Kerkhoven investigates how Dutch regional news media can develop and implement innovation strategies in order to fulfil their democratic functions and be economically viable.
