Aortic valve stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve, has become the most prevalent valvular heart disease in Europe and North America. It is a progressive disease, and most patients require an aortic valve replacement to prevent the obstruction to outflow from becoming lethal. Although the majority of prostheses used in these operations are stented bioprostheses, stentless bioprostheses have also been developed and research suggests that the hemodynamic performance of the latter is superior. Laurens Wollersheim evaluates the clinical outcomes and functional performance of one particular stentless prosthesis, the Freedom Solo Valve.
