Substance abuse disorders are highly prevalent and the patient population suffering from these disorders is heterogeneous. And while there are many evidence-based treatments available, resources are limited. Given these circumstances, an important element in treating patients is patient-treatment matching: selecting, from all the possible options, the treatment that is most likely to bring about positive outcomes for the patient. In his research, Maarten Merkx looked at the feasibility of implementing guidelines for matching patients with substance abuse disorders to different treatment intensities.
