To induce labour in women with an unripe cervix, both mechanical and pharmacological methods are used. When prostaglandin preparations were introduced for induction of labour in the 1970s and 1980s, older methods such as the Foley catheter were rapidly replaced without a proper comparison. Mieke ten Eikelder investigates the safety and efficacy profile of the Foley catheter compared to prostaglandin E1.
