Cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and this is reflected both on the cellular and the population level: there is a great variety of different types of tumours, but individual tumours also consist of a variety of different types of cells. Evelyn Fessler provides an overview of aspects that contribute critically to tumour heterogeneity and discuss these implications in a clinical context. She also highlights the connections that exist between intra and inter-tumoural heterogeneity.
