Catherine Volgenant studies red fluorescent dental plaque (RFP) and how it can be used to as an indicator for oral microbial disease. The results of her in vitro and in vivo studies show that the red fluorescence emitted by caries and periodontitis varies in wavelength and intensity depending on the exact microbial composition.
