In his research, Andreas van Cranenburgh applies a statistical parsing theory to literary language. The aim is to investigate what separates novels categorised as literary from other works. He uses a data-oriented approach that rests on the assumption that the re-use of chunks of training data can be detected and exploited and applied to new sentences. Van Cranenburgh investigates to what extent ratings of a work’s literary quality can be predicted based on textual features.
