The new towns Almere, Cergy-Pontoise and Milton Keynes are the result of programmes initiated in the 1960s and 1970s aimed at creating a form of urbanity that combines the attractions of urban and suburban life. Ivan Nio uses the basic category of ‘modernity’ to analyse the tension and ambivalence of the new cities’ suburban urbanity.
