Daily oral hygiene contributes to oral health by reducing plaque. Dental plaque is an important cause of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) which can eventually turn into chronic periodontitis. The aim of Sonja Sälzer’s research is whether a number of oral hygiene devices and products, including powered toothbrushes and a smart software visualisation system, actually result in improved oral hygiene self-care. She also studies the effect of sodium lauryl sulphate, which is commonly used in toothpaste products for its foaming effect.
