The regionalisation of care means increasing numbers of critically ill patients are being transported between Intensive Care Units at different hospitals. The risks associated with critical care transport are significant, but dedicated equipment and expertise can help reduce them. In the Netherlands, such transports have been professionalised through a nationwide system of Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) with special retrieval teams, advanced mobile equipment and the use of dedicated IC ambulances. Erik Jan van Lieshout studies technical and clinical aspects of IC transport with a MICU.
