The ‘female gothic’ film genre has been primarily studied from a psychoanalytical perspective. As Gözde Onaran argues this approach focuses on heroine’s pathologies and frequently defines female subjectivity in terms of masochism. Onaran shifts this critical focus by approaching the contemporary Gothic genre through an affirmative Deleuzian feminist framework. She studies five films which, she argues, draw on the female Gothic genre but also use a number of strategies to deterritorialise it.
