Most people are familiar with the feeling of humiliation. The emotion is associated with low self-esteem depression, anxiety disorders, suicide, homicide and violence. Liesbeth Mann studies humiliation in an intragroup and intergroup context. She finds that, in an intragroup context, humiliation is felt more strongly when someone is humiliated alone, in front of a group of others.
