In his research, Christiaan van der Kwaak investigates the macroeconomic effectiveness of government policies in an environment in which commercial banks are weakly capitalised following a financial crisis and have significant amounts of risky sovereign debt on their balance sheets. He argues that this burden of sovereign debt can reduce the effectiveness of government policies, and new policies are therefore required.
