Previous research has shown that stimulation of the vagus nerve, one of the cranial nerves, inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine release in macrophages, white cells that ingest pathogens. However, the origin of the neurotransmitter that activates immune cells in the intestinal mucosa remains unknown. Shobhit Dhawan investigates the role played by the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and norepinephrine in modulating innate and adaptive immunity in the intestine.
