Dentists can be confronted with patients with hypermobile temporomandibular joints. These patients may report dull clicks of the jaw joints, problems with closing their jaw smoothly or, in the worst case, an inability to close the mouth after opening it widely. This latter condition is known as ‘open lock’. Matthijs Tuijt uses biomechanical computer models of the masticatory system to study the interaction between joint shape and muscle orientation.
