Functional defecation disorders (FDD) in childhood comprise functional constipation and functional non-retentive fecal incontinence. To date, the etiology of childhood FDDs is not fully understood and treatment is therefore based mainly on clinical experience rather than scientific evidence. Sophie Wessel’s research focuses on outcome measures, new diagnostic investigations and treatment options for childhood FDDs. Another aim is to further unravel the roles played by behaviour problems and obesity.
