The mouth is host to lots of different microbes, mostly present in dental plaque, which is a form of biofilm. A biofilm is a community of microbes adhered to a surface. Marleen Janus studies the growth conditions of in vitro biofilms. One of her studies involves culturing Candida albicans in a complex model to study its effects on oral biofilm ecology and phenotypes.
