The cardiovascular system is a complex network formed by numerous connected blood vessels. The proper functioning of this high density network is essential for human health as it provides our bodies with nutrients, oxygen and hormones and controls its temperature. Niels Heemskerk’s research focuses on investigating the precise mechanisms by which the vasculature maintains its integrity in the face of daily stressors including thrombin and histamine, and the effects of blood pressure and temperature. He looks specifically at the mechanisms underlying the dynamic remodelling of endothelial cell junctions.
