Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding the teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss. Research suggests there are links between periodontitis and both diabetes mellitus and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but the exact nature of the biological mechanisms, clinical relevance and implications of these interactions is not yet entirely clear. The aim of Wijnand Teeuw’s research is to contribute to our understanding of the complex relationship between these three disease states intricately caught up in a ‘Bermuda Triangle’.
