Tanit Lizama Gabriel investigates the impact of disturbed lysosomal lipid metabolism on cells of the immune system, in particular macrophages. Macrophage function relies strongly on proper endosomes and lysosomes. In lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs), like Gaucher’s disease and Niemann Pick type C disease, lysosomes are disturbed by impaired lipid metabolism, which has consequences for macrophage function and phenotype.
