Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterised by inflammation of the synovial membranes around the joints. This causes pain, swelling and stiffness. Karen Maijer uses a variety of techniques to study the earliest phase of RA to improve our understanding of the processes underlying the development of the disease.
