Meaningful learing being a key concept in this approach, in reading the aim is for students to learn to read and understand texts in a way that is meaningful to them. Yvonne van Rijk carries out a case study looking at the way DE teachers create a learning environment in which this meaningful potential is maximised by choosing texts that relate to sociocultural practices and address students' motives and emotions. She also carries out a study evaluating the effectiveness of the DE approach in the upper grades of primary eduction.
