Dagmar Ouweneel focused her research on the use of mechanical circulatory support in patients with cardiogenic shock after acute myocardial infarction. Cardiogenic shock, the most prevalent cause of death among patients with acute myocardial infarction, is caused by myocardial contractility, which results in a cascade of decreased cardiac output, hypotension and decreased coronary blood flow.
