Gang Wang explores strategies for inactivating or eradication the HIV provirus in the genome of long-lived resting T cells and other cell types. These 'reservoir cells' are not affected by combined antiretroviral therapy, currently the standard treatment for HIV-1. This means the virus can quickly rebound from this reservoir if the therapy is interrupted. Genome engineering therefore offers potential strategy towards developing a real cure for HIV.
