Mieke Schulte studies a number of experimental treatments for substance use disorders that aim to dampen motivational excitation and improve cognitive control. This involves investigating the neurocognitive and neurochemical mechanisms underlying such disorders, specifically with respect to the neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA and their association with impulsivity.
