Nik de Boer studies the constitutional review of EU law by national constitutional courts. Constitutional courts from the EU member states review EU treaties and decisions by EU institutions in terms of their compatibility with national constitutional law. These judgements concern fundamental questions such as the EU's democratic legitimacy, the protection of person's fundamental rights and freedoms and the place of national sovereignty within the EU. De Boer asks whether constitutional courts are the institutions that should decide such issues of major constitutional importance.
