The Dutch Republic has no well-defined place in economic historiography. While international historiography often views Amsterdam as the birthplace of modern capitalism, Dutch historiography views trade in Amsterdam as monopolistic in nature. Bert Westera has aimed to clarify the position of the Republic within the 17th century European economy. To do so, he has analysed the international trade of iron ordnance.
