Lisa Kattenberg studies late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth reason of state in Spain, consisting of a pragmatic way of thinking and writing about preserving a ruler's personal power and his ability to protect his dominion from internal and external threats. She shows how a tension between moral and religious principles and political prgamatism was constantly present both in political writings and in the political arena.
