Housing has been an emotionally charged subject in Amsterdam since the end of the 19th century. Long before the city council, the state, and housing corporations were involved, commercial developers realised working-class houses in large numbers. Rensko Smid describes the role played by project developers and mortgage companies in the urban growth of Amsterdam by, for example, using council records, minutes of mortgage bank boards, land registries and company archives.
