The holographic dictionary translates between two parts of theoretical physics that appear at first sight to be completely different. Although its best-understood incarnations arise from string theory, many properties of the holographic dictionary are in some way related only to symmetries. One such property involves the boundary symmetries of space and time, which are influenced by its geometry in the same way that the shape of a musical instrument determines its timbre. In order to understand its generality and its underlying mechanism, I have studied applications of the holographic correspondence, as well as string theory dualities and extensions to non-relativistic systems using boundary symmetries.
