Gabriël van Beusekom studies the relationship between gender nonconformity and mental health in young adolescents and adults. He investigates differences between sexual minority and heterosexual youth in the way gender nonconformity is related to experiences of peer victimisation, and subsequent mental health outcomes. He also looks at the way sex differences in how gender nonconformity affects mental health through internalised homophobia and experiences of (homophobic) victimisation. Finally, he examines the positive influence of parental acceptance for the mental health of gender-nonconforming and sexual minority youth. Van Beusekom will defend his dissertation on National Coming Out Day.
