An increasing number of preclinical studies have emphasized the necessity of a well-orchestrated phased post-MI immune response. Different inflammatory cells are recruited to the infarcted heart to preliminary clear cell debris and subsequently propagate scar tissue formation. Ellis ter Horst clarifies important aspects of the post-MI immune response in both clinical and experimental settings to elucidate therapeutic opportunities that could beneficially influence post-MI cardiac healing.
