Danis Garaev analyses the intellectual environment that gave birth to the propaganda of jihad in post-Soviet Russia. Focusing on discourses of jihadism in Russia's North Caucasus, Garaev argues that post-Soviet manifestations of jihadi ideology emphasize not an embedding in global discourses but in regional specifics, with calls to jihad being dressed in the histories of particular Muslim minorities and their ethnic identities.
