Acute circulatory failure or shock is still a common problem in critically ill patients. Distributive shock is characterised by microcirculatory perfusion alterations. Gerke Veenstra studies direct in vivo observation of microcirculation by handheld microscopes. This technique can trace rapid changes in volume status, which is helpful for the indication, evaluation and cessation of fluid therapy.
