The relevance of history as a subject in secondary education is often problematic. Many students don’t seem to see the point of studying the past. Also, the curriculum documents usually stress the importance of history for the development of personal identities and orientation on the past and future without offering sufficient guidance to students and teachers to pursue these goals. Dick van Straaten develops tools for relevant history teaching that pursues meaningful connections between the past, present and future.
