Children who do not learn Dutch at home as a first language, are likely to fall behind rapidly at school and can end up slipping through the cracks of the educational system. Teachers in regular primary school situations are not always trained in second language acquisition and the programmes used are not specifically suited to the needs of these learners. Hanneke Pot investigates the effectiveness of Total Physical Response, a language-learning approach that encourages receptive language-learning through an emphasis on physical actions, in teaching this group.
