Hedgehog-dependent cancers make up a large fraction of all cancers diagnosed worldwide. Aberrant activation of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway occurs in malignancies of the breast, lungs, stomach, skin and pancreas. Outcomes vary strongly, however. Almost none of the cases of pancreatic cancer are cured, while basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer that occurs at much higher incidences, is rarely fatal. Veronique Veenstra investigates the different Hh pathway activation mechanisms in the two diseases.
