Upconversion particles doped with lathanide ions can convert continuous-wave near-infrared light into higher energy ultraviolet or visible light. They have demonstrated great potential for biological and biomedical applications. Apart from displaying a deeper tissue penetration, using these particles also reduces background autofluorescence. Yadan Ding investigates several key issues related to their functionalisation.
