Because of its potential for observing rare events, single-molecule fluorescence detection has proved useful in the investigation of catalytic reactions. Dongdong Zheng focuses on the study of organic reactions catalysed by cinchona alkaloids. This requires the design of catalysts and reagents that carry bright and photostable fluophores. These are immobilised in order to observe single molecule events.
