Youths with severe behavioural or psychiatric problems who cannot live at home or in foster care are placed in youth residential care. Sophie de Valk investigates one element that keeps threatening the effectiveness of treatment in these institutions, namely institutional repression. This can be characterised by harsh and unfair control and punishment, a weak organisational structure, no flexibility, incremental rules, lack of privacy, extreme boredom and humiliation of inmates. The aim of De Valk's research is to gain greater insight into the causes of repression and find ways to diminish it.
