Páramos are grasslands in the high Andes which are essential ecosystems for water regulation and carbon reservoirs. The plants that grow there exhibit certain characteristics adapated to low mean annual temperature and extreme changes in daily temperature. Marian Cabrera's research is among the first attempts to systematically collect quantitative information on functional plant traits in the páramo of Colombia at the community level.
