Lars Aalsma’s research focusses on deriving macroscopic predictions of quantum gravity. Recent studies suggest that quantum gravity effects do not always decouple at low energies and Aalsma examines this phenomenon in the context of extremal black holes, anti-de Sitter space and de Sitter space.

In his thesis, Aalsma shows that all these backgrounds display a universal quantum instability that is given by the gravitational entropy. In addition, he discusses a specific embedding of de Sitter space in string theory and shows that these vacua spontaneously break supersymmetry.
